“Another year, another Night of English Literature, where our attendees leave not only with copious amounts of discounted English books but with their hearts full, especially this year, after Dr. Pauline McGonagle, Dr. Tekla Mécsnober, and Margaret Finlay delivered inspiring talks on how to “play with hearts” in one way or another. Dr. McGonagle, card expert, explained why we’re so often unlucky in cards and advised us to step outside and turn a stone to change our fortunes! Too bad she didn’t mention how to improve our chances of passing her exams. Next, Dr. Mécsnober shared insights on “The languages of the heart” and how to charm our Dutch neighbors once we’ve moved past the “sending Tikkies” stage by learning their intricate and undoubtedly sexy language. And last but certainly not least, Margaret Finlay took a break from her PhD to enlighten us about the “stabby-stabby” and “kissy-kissy” medieval literature, advising us to avoid sleeping with our best friend’s wife and, instead, to embrace the charm of certified horse-boys. At NUTS, we are deeply grateful to everyone who took the time to attend this year’s Night of English Literature, even on slightly shorter notice, and to all our wonderful speakers for not only enriching our minds but, on this occasion, playing with our hearts.”
