Dear first-year students,
SV NUTS, the study association of the English department, welcomes you all to your Bachelor’s English Language and Culture, to the University, and to the beautiful city of Groningen!
Study Association NUTS has been around for over 50 years and we aim to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment that is, above all, extremely fun! We organise all sorts of events throughout the academic year. Our smaller, recurring events include drinks, pub quizzes, pub crawls, board game night, high teas, karaoke, and so much more. Our major events are the Night of English Literature which is a fun night in the beautiful Van der Velde bookstore after hours, and the Poetry and Music night, which is an open podium where people can show off their poetic and musical talents. And best of all, each year our Travel Committee organises a fun and exciting trip abroad towards the end of the academic year.
Not only is our association a place for socialising and getting to know your fellow students, or to ask any questions you might have, but as a member you also get many special perks like a discount on your studybooks, drinks and snacks at GraanRepubliek and free entrance or a discount on all NUTS events.
Have you already decided to study English Language and Culture? Great! Join NUTS and receive discounts, join fun events, make great friends and enjoy life as an English student to the fullest!

Open Day
The RUG also organizes open days that you can attend. If you are curious about the ELC program we encourage you to attend these open days. Besides an informative presentation by our study advisor Hans Jansen, the ELC student ambassador and members of NUTS will be there to answer any questions you have about the Bachelor, faculty, university and the city of Groningen.
Student for a Day
Do you want to get a even better idea of what being an English student is like? Join one of our ‘Student for a Day’ events! Usually, ELC ‘Student for a Day’ events consist of attending one or more first-year lectures. At the beginning of the day, you’ll meet up with the student ambassador, study advisor, and a NUTS member. They will escort you to your lectures, help you find your way around the university buildings, and answer any questions you may have. We really recommend you to attend the ‘Student for a Day’ events if you are having trouble deciding between multiple Bachelors.
Web Class
To help you get an even better idea of what it is like to study English Language and Culture, our Bachelor offers Web classes! Do you want to experience the content, methods and atmosphere of our Bachelor’s programme using your computer in your own home? Enrol in our free, 4 week online taster courses called web classes. Our tutors are ready to give you personal feedback on the assignments you hand in. The main focus of this year’s web class is on literature, specifically Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The course material introduces you to Shakespeare in his historical context and explains the ways that plays were staged in outdoor theatres in early seventeenth-century England. The course material supplies you with the information necessary to compare and contrast the acting of Shakespeare’s plays in his own time and today.
